Nicholas Veasey is a painter who photographs. The work begins with observation — a swimmer at the far end of a pool, a man with a coffee outside a café well after midnight, the particular light someone happens to be standing in. The photograph holds onto the moment; the painting is the longer argument with it.

Recurring through the work are solitude and intimacy, the relationship between people and their surroundings, and the ways light can transform an otherwise ordinary experience. Rather than treating people and landscape as opposing subjects, he is drawn to the places where they coexist — moments of stillness, harmony or quiet tension between an individual and the world around them.

He also writes: essays and notes on the artists, books, places and ideas that shape how he looks and makes.

He does not try to explain what the moments meant. He is not certain himself, and the not knowing is most of the reason for painting them.
